The Confectioner Guild The Confectioner Chronicles Book 1 eBook Claire Luana
My rating was due primarily to the pacing and the wasted time bumbling around. Also the world building was lacking.I enjoyed Wren. Some of her actions weren’t understood but as more of her life is explained we begin to understand her. Wren the orphan, wren the apprentice, wren the murder?
It was painful at times to watch her bumble her way through all the politics and intrigue. And it often felt a bit unfair..but she tried her best and tried to learn as much as possible. I’m not sure I could of done better.
As a person, heroine ...I enjoyed her. She is caring, smart, self sacrificing and practical. She has a great sense of humor and dry wit that carried through till the end.
The world building was confusing,... riding in carriages yet they have running water? And the governing of the guild and the Magic’s...seems insignificant. If these guilds are so powerful why are they still reliant on the king. It’s true monarchy at it’s worse!
Poor Wren is abused and treated so callously by the people who supposedly are her family ..friends....it’s hard to imagine what a true enemy could do. The ultimate betrayal was Hale. He came on so strong. He jokes and laughed with her,and made her open up to him ....then he betrayed her. No he almost strangled her to death. Yes he was worried about Sable. But seriously...did he really believe Wren capable if so then why bother with her to begin with. It was harsh and I’m not sure I could of forgiven him. I’m happy Sable sent him away, atleast she had common sense enough to do so. Sable is still an unknown to me, she suffered a lot in her past and she never really came to terms with. Nonetheless I’m not sure how her relationship with Wren will grow or change.
Poor Lucas. Poor powerless Lucas. Being the Kings son has absolutely no benefit at all? I found it hard to believe. He doesn’t seem like a good inspector but he tries. And I do think that he cares for Wren. In some ways I do think that he still doesn’t understand how vile his father, the king, truly is. The king had his girlfriend tortured for crying out loud. It makes their relationship seems...impossible. I have a feeling there’s more to come....

Enter a new world and age in this captivating book that secretly mixes magic and food. You won’t be sorry.
I like to bake and I like a good adventure story. This was a well crafted tale, full of intrigue and colorful characters. 👍👍
I absolutely enjoyed this book. It was well written. I could barely put the book down to go back to work. Or to bed at a reasonable time. Awesome writing. Thank you

This was a great book. It was full of suspense and mystery as well as sweets and romance. I’m looking forward to reading book 2
I adored Wren she is one spunky lady. This new world is easy to understand and believe in. Interesting blend of magic and cooking. Nice mistery included. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what happens next.
A delight for the palate and mind. A book that is nearly unquantifiable, it is a murder mystery, an urban fantasy, pure fantasy, a coming of age tale, and something near steampunk in feel.
The heroine is vivid and very human. The concepts have unique twists. And wonderfully there is room to explore... many journeys to take and friendships to make.
The first in a new series by Claire Luana, The Confectioner’s Guild pulled me in very quickly with the concept of food based magic, which intrigued my interest as a hobbyist chef/baker. In this case, Wren, our protagonist, bakes luck into desserts. Though her luck doesn’t last long as she’s accused of murder and has little time to figure out who really did it.
I related with Wren and her plight as the story progressed; there’s quite a bit of depth to her character with a dark past that’s revealed to be worse each time I dove in. Yet she manages to have a sense of optimism and determination throughout, making her very endearing. I grew to like most of the other characters that enter her life in various ways, though there’s a running theme of trust I can relate to, and by the end, I’ve had different thoughts about most members of the cast than going in. All of them have interesting background that I got invested in, as well as their relations to each other. I especially liked Hale, Sable and Lucas the most.
The plot is great, and kept me engaged throughout with the mixture of fantasy, mystery and political intrigue to see if Wren would make it out alive and be cleared of her charges. The situation changes a lot quickly, keeping the pace quick and there’s quite a few twists that threw me for a loop, especially in the second half. The murder mystery aspect was done well, and while I was shocked to find out who did it, all the pieces fell into place if you paid enough attention and was easy to understand. The political subplot added another layer of depth that is setting up for the rest of the series. There’s a romance element introduced as well that didn’t feel shoehorned, but added to the story.
The world building is very vivid and paints of a fantasy world with inspirations of Seattle and the surrounding region (which is where Luana lives). The prose is clear and vivid and has a lot of analogies to food, which is a plus for a book that’s revolved around food magic. I loved the cooking sequences too.
At the end is the first chapter to the next book in the series, The Confectioner’s Coup, which I’m looking forward to and has a good start. Overall, a great start to a new series and can’t wait to read more!
